What Are DOT and Immigration Physicals?

Oasis Medical Center of Georgia extends its services to help individuals meet their obligations to the federal government. Men, women, and children entering the U.S. from another country are required to undergo an immigration physical. Our practitioners are certified by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to perform immigration physicals as part of government requirements for U.S. residency. We can provide a full examination and immunizations and help with the necessary paperwork.

If you operate a commercial motor vehicle, the federal Department of Transportation (DOT) requires that you have a qualifying physical exam every 24 months to make sure that you can safely operate a vehicle weighing five tons or more. Certified by the State of Georgia Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, our practice is also listed in the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. We offer comprehensive physicals for commercial drivers to obtain a valid medical card showing that they have successfully passed a DOT physical examination and are eligible to drive.

If you're in the Dallas, GA area and need an immigration or DOT physical, call us today to learn more and schedule an appointment.

What Is Required for DOT and Immigration Physicals?

For DOT Exams
A DOT physical at Oasis Medical Center of Georgia begins with an assessment of your medical history and medications. After that, we will conduct a variety of tests, including checking:

  • Blood pressure
  • Pulse
  • Hearing
  • Vision
  • Heart health
  • Brain health
  • Condition of the lungs
  • Condition of the spine

In addition to the physical itself, the DOT requires that you inform us of any new diagnoses or health conditions. If you pass the physical, you will receive a certificate that is valid for up to two years. However, if you do not pass, you may still be eligible to apply for a medical exemption.

For Immigration Exams
Before an immigration physical exam, individuals need to have the required paperwork, which includes the following:

  • Valid government-issued picture ID (driver's license, passport)
  • I-693 paperwork
  • Official immunization record (without proof of immunization, you'll need to get all required vaccinations)

The immigration physical includes a tuberculosis (TB) skin test; however, we CANNOT perform the TB skin test if anyone has had any live vaccines, such as MMR, Varicella, or a TB skin test, within the past 30 days. If you have had any of these vaccines or had a TB skin test recently, you must wait 30 days to have your immigration exam. If you've had a positive TB skin test in the past, we must have documented proof, including the date it was placed, read, and the size of the reaction. Without this documentation, we must place the TB skin test again.

For applicants from birth to 17 years old:
Children must be up to date on immunizations based on our standards. We will not be able to let you know what the child requires until you're in our office and we have the actual shot record to review.

For applicants 18 – 64 years old, you will need:

  • Tdap vaccine
  • Varicella vaccine or history of Varicella illness (chickenpox)
  • MMR (if born after 1957)

For applicants 65 years and older, you will need:

  • Tdap vaccine
  • Pneumococcal vaccine
  • Varicella vaccine or history of Varicella illness (chickenpox)
  • During flu season (December 1 to March 31), ALL applicants 6 months to 18 years old and 50 years old and above are required to have an influenza vaccine during that season.

Additional test requirements:

  • Blood test for TB: Required for children two years of age and older
  • Syphilis test and Gonorrhea urine test: Required for applicants ages 15 and above
  • Pregnant women cannot receive certain live vaccines. They should bring a letter from their OB/GYN stating their pregnancy status.
